Risky piece of photography in New York: the french photographer Erica Simone made pictures of herself, publically, while being stark naked. In a metro full of strangers she pretends to be a beggar.

To Simone photography has become a passion. The idea that people at that very place in New York were more concerned about their latest purchases than being worried about a homeless person they ran into, intrigued her. She wanted to see what would happen if someone just put off his/her clothes.

The result of her experiences can be seen in an exhibition in New York starting at april 14.

I think it is a kind of happening. Something unusual happens in the streets of New York, a naked woman does normal daily things but now naked.
When I read your thread I thought always this proviking with the naked body, it is not original anymore. When I saw the pictures I was happy surprised by the beautiful peaceful pictures. It looks like it is normal to do daily activities naked. It is so natural. That is a really strong point of the pictures. But what is it in the picture that makes it so natural? Is it the naked body or is it the setting or the framing? I don't have an answer yet on it.

We do have a silly way to be ashamed looking at a naked body as well as showing one. For too long nakedness has only been seen in those ´certain kinds of films´ and concealing it everywhere else. This, in my opinion, has changed our way of thinking in a very alarming way, and we automatically connect nudity with porn or sex. Only places where naked human body "can" be shown in an un-sexual way is in mother-child context (which is funny, ´cause it is the very best implementation of sexuality in this world!).

Nudity is shocking and provocative; causing us to re-evaluate out morality, thoughts and chastity. For this reason it is a great way to bring attention to certain matter.

Is it art then? Hmm.. from my point of view human body already is one beautiful piece of art; photographing it being observing the reactions it evokes.

i think it is more social protest than art. the pics are quite aesthetic though. so maybe it's art too.

Erica Simone's project has brought to my mind Ou Zhihang's photographs. Of course the main reason for each of these projects were a different. Zhihang does pushups at a place of topical significance in China. He told that sometimes it was very difficult to take these pictures, because of police and law (that being necked in a public space is forbidden).
You can find his photographs here: http://www.archive.worldpressphoto.org/search/layout/result/indeling/detailwpp/form/wpp/start/38/q/ishoofdafbeelding/true/trefwoord/year/2009?id=wpp%3Acol1%3Adat10256

On the other hand, especially according Simone's photographs, I have thinking what kind of activity it is? Is it art? Is it social protest? Or is it a kind of happening? What do you think about it?
