People do love keeping photographs - of their family, friends and of themselves. There are always some small photos in the wallet, wedding portraits on the fireplace shelf and a lot of pictures just everywhere and from everywhere. Why do people keep photographs? An interesting discussion presents an extract from Agatha Christie's "Mrs. McGinty's Death".

Why do people keep photographs?

Why? Goodness knows! Why do people keep things - junk - trash, bits and pieces. They do - that's all there is to it!

Up to a point I agree with you. Some people keep things. Some people throw everything away as soon as they have done with it. That, yes, it is a matter of temperament. But I speak now especially of photographs. Why do people keep, in particular, photographs?

As I say, because they just don't throw things away. Or else because it reminds them - Poirot pounced on the words.

Exactly. It reminds them. Now again we ask - why? Why does a woman keep a photograph of herself when young? And I say that the first reason is, essentially, vanity. She has been a pretty girl and she keeps a photograph of herself to remind her of what a pretty girl she was. It encourages her when her mirror tells her unpalatable things. She says, perhaps, to a friend: 'That was me when I was eighteen...' and she sighs... You agree?

Yes - yes, I should say that's true enough.

Then that is reason. No. 1. Vanity. No reason. No. 2. Sentiment.

That's the same thing?

No, no, not quite. Because this leads you to preserve, not only your own photograph but that of someone else... A picture of your married daughter - when she was a child sitting on hearthrug with tulle round her... Very embarrassing to the subject sometimes, but mothers like to do this. And sons and daughters often keep pictures of their mothers, especially, say, if their mother died young. 'This was my mother as a girl.'

I'm beginning to see what you're driving at, Poirot.

And there is, possibly, a third category. Not vanity, not sentiment, not love - perhaps hate - what do you say?

Hate?

Yes. To keep a desire for revenge alive. Someone who has injured you - you might keep a photograph to remind you, might you not?

I agree with others. The most common reason to keep photos is to keep memories. There are so many important moments in life to capture. Still I'm a little bit worried about the inflation of photo. With this I mean nowadays in digital time it's ”too” easy to take photos. Maybe you'll take two hundred photos of one event and then just keep them all. What is the value of one picture if there are ten pictures looking the same?

For me photographs are the captures of moments. I have these moments also in my mind, but as a memory. And memories can become vague. To catch back the real moment, I can take a look on the pictures. But also reversed, when I want to laugh or when I'm in a nostalgic mood, I look up pictures which remind me of these moments.

And I agree with Heidi about both keeping the picturese in a photo album (and I prefer to write some phrases next to it) and saving my photoalbums when my house burns down. If you don't have the photo's it feels sometimes like the memorie is less strong.

Funny is that my dad has the contradict thought about photo's. He always says stop making photo's and enjoy the moment! I think this is also important, but as a memory of this enjoyable moment I always want to have a picture.

I also believe that people keep photos for memories. You can always go back to the pictures and see "how it really was". Cinema tickets and letters do not have the same power as photos. If my house would set on fire the first thing I would save (after my man and my daughter of course:) would be the pictures of us, especially the pictures of my baby girl. Nothing could ever replace the pictures of my new born baby. I will never have that moment again and I would be devastated if I would loose the pictures. It is something so special. I always have atleast two safety copies of all my pictures and I try to make them into papre versions as soon as possible.

People keeps photographs in order to show and share them with people around them or in public rather self-fulfilled by reminding memories.
It's inevitable not to concern people or friends whom we want to show the photographs. As "Seeing is believing", it's easy to explain our memories and travel story by letting them see pictures or adding explanations on them.

I agree with Helly. There is a lot of escapism to it. Sometimes when I feel nostalgic, I take out my albums and kind of escape to the world of the past, of the memories. For me it is importat that the pictures are printed out and put nicely in an album or scrab book (see the link). If there was a fire in my house and I only had time to save one item, I would definately choose my photo albums.

Probalby we keep as a memory because they make it easy for us the recall the moment when a particular picture was taken. At least a picture makes it easier to recall good times than letters, tickets etc. Emotions are expressed in a more enchanted way. A picture will survive, so smile and look alive!

You mainly wrote that we keep photographs because of memories - it's lot of true in it. But why photographs? We can also keep letters, tickets (from our first date in the cinema or theater) or any other special pieces, which help us to remember. So why photographs? What is it in them?

I think as well that people keep them as a reminder. For example, I keep my pics on my computer and while studying breaks I often have a look on some of them - especially on emotional ones which show my friends and me having fun. then I'm experiencing this moments for some minutes in my mind again and feel good. It's like a kind of escapism then...

What an interesting topic! I as well do agree that people keep pictures as a reminder from the past; the good memories, happy occasions and festivities. The great value that is given to pictures, i think, comes from the time it was not that easy to get one. From the past times when it took several minutes to get the picture and when the cameras where not that common. I frequently find myself thinking that something printed has more value that something digital; it is concrete, something to actually "put your finger on" to.

I as well have loads of pictures, of my friends, relatives, happy times and beautiful views. I keep them in my drawer - usually find them by accident when cleaning up and have a moment of reminiscence. This happens occasionally - until that im just happy to know they´re there :)
